Karl Wallinger of World Party talks about his musical journey and key World Party songs.

Karl Wallinger World Party

Out of print on vinyl for years, a limited number of Goodbye Jumbo (1990) has been reissued on 180gm audiophile vinyl via Seaview Records. To date, Karl Wallinger has reissued the World Party, Private Revolution and Bang! LPs. Egyptology will follow in the late Winter. When he’s not busy at the pressing plant, he’s toiling away on a new batch of soon to be legendary material, or so I’m told.

  1. Insightful interview. I went back and listened to the first recording of Ship of Fools on FB that he mentioned. Great to hear the development to the finished version.

  2. karl has written some beautiful songs that I still often play on my daily work commute….than you for the music Karl

Particularly like …making it all come true

  3. I took my daughter to her first concert to see World Party at Sheffield Octagon. We thought it was wonderful and still play your insightful and clever music. Sorry you’ve had a bad time healthwise. I hope you’re happy now?.

  4. Hard to listen to this on the sad news of Karl’s passing. I hope that someone can lovingly take charge of his legacy and see that things are released that do him justice, because it is clear from the response that he has left a lot of deep love for his work behind. I hope that he knew how much he touched people. I didn’t realize how much it meant to others as much as it does to me until I have seen the outpouring.

In mentioning the 3 note player at Real World with Peter Gabriel, that will be Djavan Gasparyan ( I may not have spelled it correctly) who plays the hadook. He has made some beautiful ethereal solo albums and also appears on Gabriel’s soundtrack of The Last Temptation Of Christ.

  5. Have loved World Party and Karl Wallinger for about 28 years. With each release, I found myself getting as much into the man as his music -finding out all these interesting aspects of his personality. I think it was all about the music for him and success was just an annoying side-note. My wife and I went to see him at his last local show a couple of years ago and he was brilliant. She always been a Waterboys fan but was unaware of Wallinger’s involvement with the band.

I didn’t realize how much I thought of Karl until on Monday night when my wife said he’d passed away on Sunday …and nearly a week on, I keep having these moments of deep, profound sadness at his loss. Rest eternal, Karl.
