We explore the life of Nick Drake with Richard Morton Jack, author of Nick Drake: The Life. This authorised biography, written with the involvement of Nick’s sister Gabrielle and Estate, provides unprecedented access to his story through original research, interviews, and personal archives.
In 1968, Nick Drake had all the ingredients for a promising life ahead. Born into a loving, creative family and blessed with a privileged background, he not only possessed striking looks and popularity as a Cambridge undergraduate but also secured a coveted record deal with the UK’s trendiest label, Island.
However, three years later, despite receiving critical acclaim for his three albums, Nick’s path took a tragic turn. Overwhelmed by mental illness, he retreated to his family home in rural Warwickshire in 1971, and his life ended in obscurity in 1974, at the age of 26.
Since then, Nick has become a figure of enduring fascination and speculation. His records have amassed millions in sales, while his songs find frequent placements in TV and film. He stands today as one of the most widely revered singer-songwriters of his generation, leaving an indelible mark on the music world.

Dear Jason,
I’m following your great and well-researched articles and podcasts for many years.
There’s so much awesome stuff to discover. My favourite podcast is the interview with Andy Morton. Such great humour and wit. I met him once at the Kaleidoscope concert in London, Hoxton Hall a couple of years ago. It’s funny because I had a similar background discovering psychedelia around the same time while leading a band.
Anyway, I hope you can continue this excellent website and podcasts in the future.
Wishing you all the Best and a real good time, Tristan, Germany, 28th june 2023.
