When the legendary Ozzy Osbourne, aka the Prince of Darkness, departed from this mortal world, fans all over the world were left mourning the loss of this unforgettable icon. Not only because of his music, but because of who he was… and what he did. This was a man who courted controversy. And we don’t just mean someone who liked a few too many drinks, or liked to place football bets or hit the casino. This was someone who took bad behaviour to a whole new level.

From biting the head off bats to biting a bat’s head off… again… and surviving spider venom injections, his life was a nonstop freak show. So, as a tribute to the legend, let’s take a look at some of his finest (or not-so-fine) moments.

The Defining Bat Biting Incident

This was, perhaps, Ozzy’s most infamous moment… and something we all remember him for. In 1982, during a live show in Des Moines, Iowa, someone threw a bat onto the stage (yes, his target audience carried bats with them). However, apparently he thought it was a rubber toy and he decided to bite its head off with his teeth. Not a great idea because he later learned that it had been alive. He was then hospitalised and treated for rabies prophylaxis… but it ended up becoming a defining image of his weird craziness and gave new meaning to the phrase “bite the bullet.”

This was the moment when he solidified his reputation as someone who didn’t just push boundaries…. He annihilated them. And he also probably inspired a lot of nightmares and safety warnings in concert venues ever since.

The Moment He Bit a Bat Again – or Did He?

Did lightning strike twice? Well, apparently so, because Ozzy claimed that he’d bitten the head off a bat more than once. At the 1982 show, lots of fans thought he was only joking – until blood started pouring from his mouth. Rumours started to circulate that he repeated the act in some of his later shows (although many think that’s a bit of an urban legend).

Whether it was true or not, the bat bite became synonymous with his on-stage persona… and cemented his brand as the “Prince of Darkness” forever.

The Spider Venom Experiment (Because… Why Not?)

Forget about the bats… we’re on to arachnids now. And another very bizarre hallmark of Ozzy’s life was when, at one point, he decided to inject himself with black widow spider venom – just to see what would happen. Yes, he actually did it. And, maybe because he really was the Prince of Darkness, the venom apparently caused a bit of swelling and discomfort, but there were no real catastrophic effects.
He joked about it, saying that he was just trying to test his limits – but whether he did it as a stunt, out of curiosity, or just plain madness, it certainly added to his reputation as being reckless.

Chicken Heads, Snails, and That Time He Ate a Spider

And he was every bit as bizarre off stage as he was on stage as well. In the early days, he famously bit off the head of a live chicken when he was in the middle of an interview (although it did turn out to be a rubber prop). He also once chomped on live snails on stage during a show in the Netherlands as yet another stunt.
In another story, he apparently ate a spider at a photo shoot… another unconfirmable legend that also became part of Ozzy folklore. Was he hungry? Was it performance art? Probably neither, but possibly both. Shock, theatre or mid-afternoon snack… It was dark.

Strange Injuries and Explosions

Ozzy had a life that was stranger than fiction… and danger often came in some of the unexpected ways. Back in 2003, he injured himself badly while hunting wild boar, and he needed a dozen stitches after a tusk ripped through his chest. However, he just continued the hunt as you’d expect.

Then there was the infamous limousine fire he was in back in 2006, when his vehicle burst into flames after he left a concert. He was lucky enough to escape with a few minor burns, but the image of a whole load of rolling flames in the night seemed like it could have been straight out of the heavy metal apocalypse.

The Hoarder House of BB King Blues Club Fire

In 2002, there was another fiery incident when an accidental fire broke out at the BB King Blues Club in Los Angeles… part of Ozzy’s empire. It burned a portion of the venue but, miraculously, didn’t cause any major injuries. There were some who saw it as poetic symmetry – a fire at a place with Ozzy’s name attached.
He often joked that a rock ‘n’ roll life was never the quiet life – and this was yet another bizarre freak occurrence… and another near miss.

A Career Built on Surviving Near-Deaths

Between his multiple addictions, a ridiculous number of near-fatal accidents, diseases, and crazy stunts, Ozzy has narrowly avoided death lots of times… and the fact that he survived into his 70s was somewhat of a miracle. He has a history including battles with substance abuse, stunts gone wrong, and health crises that would probably have ended most careers a lot previously.

Despite all of this, he still recorded album after album, toured, raised a (somewhat dysfunctional) family, and even landed his own Hollywood star and a spot in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. His survival wasn’t luck… it was more like tenacity wrapped in irony.

His Final Tour – No Rest for the Prince of Darkness

He may have been plagued with health injuries, quad bike accidents, fires and more… but he still had plenty of life in him yet. In early 2024, he announced what he called his final world tour. In interviews, he even grimaced when he discussed the gruelling schedule, saying he’d been on stage so many times he might as well be 156 years old in rock terms.

Even as he battled his illnesses – including Parkinson’s – retirement was never quiet. His final U.S. dates were sold out, and he still had all the world wondering what he would do.

The Man, the Myth, the Legend

Ozzy Osbourne wasn’t just a rock musician; he was a contradiction, wrapped in an enigma… wrapped in a leather jacket. Gentle with his break-up songs, absolutely feral on stage, and a real human being between headlines. The legend of the Prince of Darkness, just like his namesake, will go on for eternity…
