Based in North West England, The Frank Flight band have been on the scene for the past two decades with mixed fortunes. However with a refreshed line-up they’ve gone into battle once more releasing their third long player – Remains.
Pitched as a prog-psych mix its seven tracks are long form but I wouldn’t say they are progressive in a Yes sense. Instead it’s guitar laden psych tinged rock – and all the better for it.
Commencing strongly with Lewis Carroll referencing “The Ballad of Alice Grey”, fairground noises move the listener into a memorable song, building to a neat middle-eight. It sets the scene for an enjoyable listen with much of the material sharing a similar sound and/or theme.
Nevertheless “Razor Glass” has a little echo of Pink Floyd, with synth strings and Gilmour-esque guitar work. “Sinaloa” emotively chronicles a relationship breakdown building up over an immense five minutes before recapping for the final three. Final track “Cat” bridges 20 minutes with song nuggets blending into the whole, not quite a song cycle but it certainly gives the chance for all band members to shine.
