New Manchester band The Electric Stars came to my attention after hearing their new double A-side single “I Want You” and “Stoned Again” out next month on Detour Records. Their influences will be familiar to Strange Brew fans – The Stones, Faces, Bowie, and Beatles and much more.

The Electric Stars Single, I Want You, Stoned Again

The music scene at the moment badly needs more groups like them to bring a bit of glam, soul and psych to the anaemic, uninspiring and tuneless charts. “I Want You” has an instantly catchy hook, great guitar chords (reminiscent of Bernard Butler in Suede’s heyday) and handclaps effortlessly blending sixties and classic indie influences. Perfect for a lazy Sunday morning, “Stoned Again” has a soulful edge echoing Primal Scream and no wonder – there’s Denise Johnson, former Primals singer, on backing vocals.

I’ve been privileged enough to hear the band’s forthcoming album and there’s some great tracks up their sleeve. “Old Fashioned Girl” is a gorgeous melody with heartfelt vocals, “Isolation” is a beautiful ballad that any artist would be proud to write and “Bedtime Stories” is like a lost Bond outtake. Excellent material – let’s hope that the Electric Stars inject some glam into the British music scene and save the world from boredom.
