Review by Mark Waters

This album comes on cassette and download from Evil Hoodoo records.

39th (Nick Wheeldon) And The Nortons (Andrew Anderson, Olly Baxter, Luke Ade-Rennard, Colin Loison, Gemma Gray, Laura Burn-Acaster, Guy Whittaker, and Sarah Henderson) provide us with a raw soundscape full of energy and drive reminiscent of the garage bands of the 1960’s. Reminds me of Dylan and The Band in the Basement Tapes on the Great White Wonder LPs and at the Isle Of Wight in 1969, the early rehearsals of the Rolling Stones, Gram Parsons first tapes issued on Sundaze records and many of the 60’s garage bands reissued on the Norton label on 45.

39th and the Nortons - On Trial

Coming from Sheffield England via Paris France they give their music a very English twist and can I say it…SHOUT! Must be a good band to see live. Indeed that is the feel when you listen to the cassette rather than the download…I am pleased I purchased a copy!

One problem I had was that Nick’s voice was back in the mix but this did not stop me enjoying the music. Stand out tracks; I Won’t Hurt You, Carefree, On Trial, One Mistake and Dead Flowers. 39th and the Nortons have just released a single I Am A Creep/Out of Time which is well worth seeking out.

If I may be permitted to give a word of advice to Nick, try dropping you voice by half an octave or so as Dylan did on Nashville Skyline and bring the voice a little more forward in the mix…Your lyrics deserve to be heard! I will be playing some tracks on my radio show Sounds Good during April!
