As we heard in The Sound of Los Angeles 1965-68 Podcast the Hollywood rock era was a melting pot for musicians who built on the platform created by the British invasion and surf sound. Sitting squarely in the centre of that scene were The Sons Of Adam, the garage rock quartet led by lead guitarist Randy Holden [Other Half / Blue Cheer], Jac Ttanna [Genesis] and the rhythm section of Mike Port and Michael Stuart-Ware [Love].
The Sons Of Adam’s three year output is collected in High Moon’s new compilation ‘Saturday’s Sons: The Complete Recordings 1964-1966’. The album captures their singles (including ‘Feathered Fish’ donated to the band by Love’s Arthur Lee), outtakes and demo recordings. Additionally it includes their 1966 concert from San Francisco’s Avalon Ballroom highlighting the group at their height.
“We were so young and fucking immortal. Live, we were pretty damned incredible. I looked forward to getting onstage every night. It was my total life.”—Randy Holden
Their history is told in a 15,000 word piece by Alec Palao with the contributions from the band and associates, augmented by rare and unseen images. The double vinyl and deluxe CD packages are some of the best I’ve seen of this type and worth investigating by anyone interested in garage rock and the mid-60s LA scene.
