Two rays of psychedelic sunshine hit the streets, or should I say ether, this month from the increasingly prolific, vinyl only record label Fruits de Mer.

They’ve drawn my attention to the rising stars of psychedelia, The Lucid Dream, and one of its greatest cult artists, nick nicely.

The Lucid Dream – Hits Me Like I’m Stoned

First of the two 7″s is The Lucid Dream’s “Hits Me like I’m Stoned”. A doomy My Bloody Valentine reverb shaking monster that does as the lyric cries, “shake to my soul”. The flip is a uk psych classic from The Factory, impeccable taste guys! “Try A Little Sunshine” is dusted off, melodies polished and bolstered by riff laden guitars, infectious vocals and driving beat. It’s on constant rotation here and should be in your mind too.

The second is a song that only comes around once in a generation. I haven’t heard anything as great in years, a hook laden synth pop psych record from 1982 by nick nicely “Hilly Fields (1892)”. Blending the genius of Thomas Dolby and John Lennon circa 1966; we get Strawberry Fields for the eighties but at the same time totally original. The flip is gorgeous new reworking of the 1982 track called “Hilly Fields (the mourning)” stripped to Syd Barrett guitars, flanging vocals but retaining the cutting edge samples. Dream like – fantastic. An artist still at his peak and a truly perfect duo.
