The increasingly prolific Fruits de Mer label keep up the incredible quality control with an excellent new release from Jack Ellister. As is favoured by the label they mix something borrowed with something new and the production and songwriting of Jack’s original a-side “The Man With The Biochopper” even manages to trump the Jagger-Richards classic cover “Citadel” on the flip.
Let’s kick off with “The Man With Biochopper”. I don’t know much about Jack but he’s clearly a great talent and manages to throw in the kitchen sink with this brilliant original track. He blends a demented Spector-esque production, swirling airy Flaming Lips atmosphere, brilliant guitar noise into a crescendo topped off with mad lyrics – what’s not to like!
“Citadel” originally on the love it or hate it Stones “Satanic Majesties” (I love it) gets dusted down, resuscitated and gets sprinkled with a dose of Piper at the Gates to great effect. Highly recommended.
To be released next month on their Regal Crabomophone offshoot see: http://www.fruitsdemerrecords.com/index.html
