John Helliwell of Supertramp looks back on the making of Crime of the Century, the newly restored 1975 concert film from Hammersmith Odeon, and the years when Supertramp grew from a hard-touring band into an international success. He talks about the chemistry between Rick Davies and Roger Hodgson, how the group developed its sound through constant rehearsing and touring, and why so much of the early live material was played differently every night. There are stories about recording “The Logical Song”, rebuilding solos after orchestral overdubs, moving to Los Angeles, and the slow breakdown in relationships that eventually split the classic line-up. John also reflects on life after Supertramp, studying music again in the 1990s, forming the Super Big Tramp Band, and the realities of getting older as a performer.
