Review by Jason Barnard
Fruits de Mer Records are shortly releasing ‘7 and 7 is’, a box-set of 45s with new versions of tracks from the psychedelic end of the American music scene of the 60s.
There are two storming Clear Light covers by The Bevis Frond. I’m not familiar with Clear Light and can’t tell whether the quality of these tracks is due to the original source or The Bevis Frond – it’s probably both!

Similarly The Higher State bring a modern indie edge to the 13th Floor Elevators. Personally I’ve found the production of Roky Erikison’s band far too murky so it’s great to appreciate these two tracks in a new light.
The marriage of Arthur Lee’s love and The Chemistry Set is a perfect union on these two Forever Changes tracks. Sendelica play the United States of America, the highlight being ‘Love Song For The Dead Che’.

King Penguin then bring the best out of The Byrds whilst The Gathering Grey take a more tranquil approach with Moby Grape material.

Finally, on a split 7-inch Black Tempest play Spirit’s masterpiece and put it through an English filter and The Seventh Ring of Saturn bring out the Dead with ‘Cream Puff War’.
A great concept that delivers on every inch of seven 45s:
