Reg King

Reg King, the former Action frontman, has finally received the release he deserves as a solo artist with the Deluxe Edition of his self-titled solo album from 1971. This extensive three-CD collection gathers all of Reg’s solo recordings, showcasing not only his incredible vocal prowess but also his talent as a songwriter. Featuring musicians from The Action/Mighty Baby and Blossom Toes/B.B. Blunder, this album is a treasure trove for fans of mod and soul music.

Disc 1 presents a newly mastered version of the original album, following the tracklist of the revered United Artists vinyl release. It includes the previously unreleased extended version of “Savannah,” clocking in at over eight minutes, and reinstates the charming children’s voices at the end of “Gone Away.” Notably, this disc also features the Reg King and B.B. Blunder single “Little Boy,” a song previously recorded by Reg’s former group, The Action and heard in their Rolled Gold set. Additionally, fans will be treated to an alternative version of the album’s standout track, “You Go Have Yourself A Good Time,” with backing from B.B. Blunder instead of Mighty Baby, as well as the non-album track “Nobody Knows Where We Are.”

Disc 2 takes listeners back to the late ’60s with a collection of earlier demos from 1969. Backed by his former bandmates from The Action, these recordings bridge the gap between The Action’s psychedelic “Rolled Gold” era and Reg King’s solo album. It’s a fascinating glimpse into the evolution of Reg’s sound and style.

Disc 3 delves even deeper into the archives, offering album demos and outtakes. Among the highlights are early 1969 recordings of four album tracks featuring The Action, showcasing the collaborative synergy that defined the band’s chemistry. Additionally, there’s a special treat with an outtake of “10,000 Miles” where Reg is backed by Mighty Baby, offering a unique perspective on this beloved track.

The inclusion of sleeve notes by MOJO magazine’s Lois Wilson, featuring insights from guitarist Brian Godding and drummer Roger Powell, adds another layer of depth to this reissue. Wilson’s meticulous research and interviews provide valuable context and enhance the overall listening experience.

For those familiar with Reg King’s previous releases, such as the Circle Records’ collection “Looking For A Dream,” it’s worth noting that this Deluxe Edition surpasses them all. The original album, which has become a cult classic, now commands high prices among collectors, making this reissue a true gem for fans and newcomers alike.

Reg King’s self-titled solo album is a testament to his immense talent as both a singer and a songwriter. This Deluxe Edition does justice to his remarkable contributions to the mod and soul music scene of the 1960s. Whether Reg King’s music has been the soundtrack to your life or is about to grace your ears for the very first time, this three-disc set is an essential treasure trove.
