Fruits de Mer, the vinyl only label for sixties/seventies inspired rock, has rapidly become a national institution for music fans of psychedelia, prog and the esoteric persuasion. They’ve kindly donated a competition prize for Strange Brew readers!

strange and soft - fruits de mer

The fruits have ripened into a four LP (and bonus CD) strange fish instrumental set of 29 artists dazzling the listener with ambient, krautrock, acid rock and much more. Highlights include:
• strange fish one’s 24 minute epic ‘Strange Fish’ by Welsh duo Sendelica echoing Pink Floyd’s ‘More’ with some gorgeous gentle electric guitar
• strange fish two’s Italian band Julie’s Haircut’s “Tarazed” incorporates elements of melodic jazz and prog
• strange fish three’s Frobisher Neck with “Underwater Starblob” conversely sets the controls for the heart of Brian Eno.
• strange fish four’s James McKeown’s gorgeous quartet of acoustic vignettes and the Amazing Sounds of DB Turi’s “Der Flammenwerfer”.
Amazing Indeed.

They also recently celebrated the career of Welsh psychedelic pop magicians the Soft Hearted Scientists for the effulgent ‘Whatever Happened To’ retrospective. They are one of the most innovative, talented bunch of musicians and songwriters around and to follow up that release have produced new album ‘False Lights’. It continues their journey into kitchen sink psychedelia; imagine Syd Barrett and Jake Thackray joining forces with the Beta Band and the Super Furries.

The prize therefore is the Soft Hearted Scientists album CD release of ‘False Lights’ on the Hip Replacement label plus a copy of the very limited pressing 7″ promo single ‘the soft and strange one’ – which features the Scientist’s ‘Song From The River’ (a track taken from ‘False Lights’) plus two specially edited tracks from the forthcoming ‘strange fish’ series of LPs from Fruits de Mer Records (the tracks are by James McKeown and Julie’s Haircut). Cool.
