Glasgow’s Red Sands are a fine new band that take their cue from the late 60s, early 70s but this ain’t no nostalgia trip. Their self titled debut long player envelops the listener with its slow burning acid indie psych sounding bang up-to-date.
Released on Electone Records every one of these 10 tracks is excellent. Starting with the indie folk of ‘Lady of Spring’ your attention is instantly grabbed and maintained with the second track, the Jethro Tull-esque, ‘So Is The Sun’.

For me the album highlight is the instantly hummable ‘Too Short a Season’. Imagine Echo and the Bunnymen meshed with The Wicker Man and you’re only half way there.

‘Painted Red’ kicks things up a gear. Building gradually into to a cracking bone crunching guitar riff it shows a tougher side to their superb harmonies.
‘The Lighthouse’ is another gem. It’s raised high by the Scottish inflections of singer Neil Donaldson and a ‘Pyscho Killer’ middle eight. Finishing with melodies worthy of Morricone, ‘A Gust of Hope’ demonstrates that Red Sands are a group that is truly onto something exciting.
